The Safari Express runs on the Great Uhuru Railway or, as it is better known, the Tazara Railway. This railway was built by the Chinese between 1970 and 1975 and is an impressive feat of engineering. The track runs for 1870 km from Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Moshi in Zambia, and to get there passes over 300 bridges, through 23 tunnels and past 147 stations. At a cost of US$230 million this was the largest railway project since the 2nd world War.
